Why we celebrate Martyrs’ Day on March 23 every year

Every year on March 23, Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs’ Day is celebrated to honor the freedom fighters who gave their lives in the fight for India’s independence from British control.

The British government hanged Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar on this day, which is recognized as a tragic chapter in history. As a result, Shaheed Diwas is celebrated to honor these heroic revolutionaries who gave their lives to ensure the country’s independence.

History and Significance of the Martyr’s Day

Following the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, a significant leader of India’s independence struggle, in November 1928, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, and others promised to seek revenge. They planned to attack James A. Scott, the British Raj’s Superintendent of Police.

Scott was the one who ordered the cops to use pepper spray on the demonstrators and launched a personal attack on Rai, injuring him severely. Lala Lajpat Rai was spearheading a silent and nonviolent march against the Simon Commission, but the police retaliated with brutality. Bhagat Singh saw this horrifying tragedy.

However, they wrongly kill Assistant Superintendent of Police John Saunders. On April 8, 1929, they exploded bombs in the Central Assembly while shouting “Inqilab Zindabad.” Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were accused of Saunders’ murder and given the death penalty. The execution date was set for March 24, however, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were hung at Lahore jail on March 23, 1931.

Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev were 23 years old when they were hung, but Rajguru was only 22. These youthful revolutionaries’ sacrifices continue to inspire today’s youth.

The martyr sacrifices themselves entirely in vain. Or rather not in vain; for they make the selfish more selfish, the lazy more lazy, the narrow narrower.

The tyrant dies and his rule is over, the martyr dies and his rule begins.
