At a cost of Rs 20,000 crore, the INS Vikrant is the largest ship ever built in India’s maritime history.

With the construction of the ‘Vikrant,’ India has joined a select group of nations that have the unique capability of designing and building an aircraft carrier in-house, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, China, and France.

The warship was built with indigenous equipment and machinery supplied by major industrial houses in India as well as over 100 MSMEs.
With the commissioning of Vikrant, India will have two operational aircraft carriers, which will strengthen the country’s maritime security.

The first phase of ship construction was completed in August 2013 with the ship’s successful launch.
When fully loaded, the 262 m long and 62 m wide Vikrant displaces approximately 43000 tonnes and has a maximum designed speed of 28 knots with a range of 7500 nautical miles.

It has approximately 2,200 compartments designed for a crew of approximately 1,600 people, including specialized cabins for female officers and sailors.
The ship also has a full-service medical complex with cutting-edge technology, including a physiotherapy clinic, ICU, laboratories, and an isolation ward.
